Monastir Synagogue

Area : 260 m2

Location: Thessaloniki, Greece

In May of 2016 the renovation of Monastir Synagogue, located on Syggrou Street in the centre of Thessaloniki, was completed. The historic monument, originally designed by Eli Ernst Levy in 1926, was brought back to life.

In order for the design to reflect the vision of the Israeli Community, representatives of the community participated in the design process. The main design goal was to reveal the original form and glory of the monument, while ensuring the building’s energy save and the user’s minimal visual disturbance. Furthermore, all aesthetic improvements, realised by an experienced artist, were guided by the original decorations, emphasizing the architectural and historical importance of the Monastir Synagogue for the city of Thessaloniki.
